How to remove an app from sale on the App Store

Take your app off the App Store in selected territories or everywhere using pricing and availability on Mac in Helm. Checklist for customers, subscriptions, and comebacks.

Removing an app from sale is a distribution decision, not a delete button. Existing customers may keep using a build they already downloaded, while new shoppers stop seeing the product page in the territories you turn off. This guide covers when to remove an app from sale, how to do it carefully from pricing and availability on Mac in Helm, and what to communicate before you flip the switch.

Remove from sale vs delete vs pause a release

Keep the vocabulary straight:

  • Remove from sale: stop offering the app for new downloads in one or more territories
  • Delete / remove the app record: a heavier account action with stricter rules; not the same as availability
  • Pause or stop a phased release: affects an update rollout, not whether the app is generally available. See manage phased release

If you only need to stop a bad update, fix the version path. If you need the product unavailable to new customers in a country, use pricing and availability.

When removal is the right move

Common reasons:

  • Legal or licensing limits in a territory
  • Sunsetting a product you no longer support
  • Temporary unavailability while you fix a serious compliance issue
  • Shifting a universal app’s availability while a replacement ships

Avoid removing from sale as a substitute for a proper phased release or a rejected binary when the real problem is one bad build.

Before you change availability

Work the checklist with product, support, and legal:

  1. Customers: what happens to people who already own the app? What about active subscriptions?
  2. Subscriptions: auto-renewable products may need their own availability and offer review so you do not strand billing expectations.
  3. Support macros: prepare answers for “why did the app disappear?” and “can I redownload?”
  4. Marketing: pause ads and featuring pitches that send traffic to a missing product page.
  5. Data and export: tell users how long they have to export if you are sunsetting for good.
  6. Comeback plan: know whether this is temporary (compliance) or permanent (sunset).

Removing quietly on a Friday without support coverage is how one-star reviews write themselves.

Change pricing and availability on Mac in Helm

App-level pricing and territory availability are a Mac workflow in Helm. Use the native controls instead of hunting through App Store Connect browser tabs when you are already in your shipping workspace.

  1. Open the app in Helm on Mac.
  2. Go to pricing and availability (territories / App Store availability for the app).
  3. Decide the scope:
    • Remove from specific territories, or
    • Remove from all storefronts where you no longer want new downloads
  4. Confirm the change carefully. Dangerous availability edits deserve a second look.
  5. Verify on the App Store (or via App Store Connect) that the product page behavior matches what you intended in those territories.
  6. Document who approved the change and when you plan to reverse it, if ever.

You still use App Store Connect on the web for agreements, tax, banking, and account admin. Helm focuses on the shipping and availability work you do as a developer, not App Analytics.

Territory strategy tips

  • Prefer removing one region for a legal issue instead of a global blackout when the rest of the world is fine
  • Keep a written map of where you are for sale, especially if IAPs sync availability to the app’s territories
  • After a temporary removal, re-check screenshots, age rating, and privacy nutrition before you return. Stale metadata causes the next review delay
  • If you are replacing App A with App B, stage the new listing first so the gap for new customers is as short as you can make it

Aftercare

In the first week:

  • Watch support volume and review themes in Helm’s reviews inbox
  • Confirm subscription messaging still matches reality
  • Update your website, Passport QR targets, and docs that deep-link to the product page
  • If the removal was temporary, schedule the restore date on the team calendar with an owner
