How to create App Store offer codes

Create and share offer codes for in-app purchases and subscriptions: when to use them, how to stay organized, and how Helm helps on Mac and iPhone.

Offer codes let you grant introductory, promotional, or win-back pricing without rebuilding your app. This guide covers when codes help, how to create and distribute them cleanly, and how Helm’s in-app purchase tools fit on Mac and iPhone.

What offer codes are for

Use codes when you want controlled distribution:

  • Press and influencer access
  • Customer make-goods after an outage
  • Win-back campaigns for churned subscribers
  • Conference or partner bundles
  • Limited beta of a premium tier

They are not a replacement for public App Store pricing. Think of them as targeted keys into an offer you already configured.

Learn the vocabulary in the offer codes glossary and compare with win-back offers when your goal is reactivating lapsed subscribers.

Prerequisites

Before you generate codes:

  1. The in-app purchase or subscription product exists and is ready.
  2. The offer (introductory, promotional, or win-back) is configured with duration and price.
  3. You know the territory and customer eligibility rules for that offer type.
  4. You have a plan for how many codes to create and where they will be stored.

Creating codes into a Slack channel with no spreadsheet is how codes get double-redeemed or lost.

Create codes with a clear campaign name

Name codes after the campaign, not after the day of the week:

  • press-wwdc-2026
  • support-make-good-june
  • partner-university-fall

Generate only what you need for the next wave. You can always create another batch. Huge unused batches are harder to audit.

Distribution patterns that work

  • One-to-one support: send a single code from your help desk after verifying the account
  • Press kit: include a small pool, track who received which batch
  • Win-back email: pair codes with a redeem link and an expiration explanation
  • On-device share: create and share redeem links from your phone when you meet someone at an event

Never post unlimited public codes in a tweet if the offer is meant to stay scarce. Public posts get scraped.

How Helm helps

On Mac, Helm covers the fuller IAP catalog: products, subscription groups, pricing (including purchasing-power-aware workflows), introductory and promotional offers, win-back offers, and creating or exporting offer codes.

On iPhone, Helm focuses on a Discounts experience: list products, create codes, and share redeem links when you are away from your desk. That is ideal for support and business-development moments.

With helm-asc on Helm Pro, you can script purchase and offer workflows as part of a larger release or ops pipeline.

Redemption and support tips

  • Tell the customer which Apple ID should redeem the code
  • Mention that codes usually cannot be reused after redemption
  • Explain what happens at the end of an introductory period
  • Keep a private log: code batch, recipient, date, reason

If redemption fails, check product status, offer availability, territory, and whether the customer already used an introductory offer on that subscription group.

Compliance and fairness

Be consistent. If you give make-goods for an outage, document the policy so every support agent offers the same remedy. For press, set an expiration so leftover codes do not circulate forever.

When a campaign ends, revoke or stop distributing unused codes if your process allows it, and archive the batch log. Future you will thank present you when finance or support asks who received free time on a subscription.
