How to create a win-back offer for subscriptions
Set up App Store win-back offers for lapsed subscribers: eligibility, pricing, offer codes, and how Helm manages IAP discounts on Mac and iPhone.Win-back offers give lapsed subscribers a reason to return at a configured price and duration. They sit alongside introductory and promotional offers in your subscription toolkit. This guide covers when win-back fits, how to configure one cleanly, and how Helm’s in-app purchase tools help on Mac and iPhone.
Win-back vs other offer types
- Introductory: for new subscribers who have not paid before (rules vary by product history)
- Promotional: for existing or returning customers under promotional offer rules
- Win-back: aimed at subscribers who churned and are eligible to return under Apple’s win-back criteria
If your goal is press access or one-off make-goods, offer codes on a promotional or win-back offer may be the better distribution path. See create offer codes for campaign hygiene.
When win-back is the right lever
Strong fits:
- Measurable churn after trial or month two
- A clear product improvement since they left
- Capacity to message eligible customers without spamming everyone
Weak fits:
- You have not fixed the reason people cancelled
- Pricing is already the lowest you can sustain
- Support cannot handle a surge of returning accounts
An offer is not a product strategy. It is a bridge back into one.
Prerequisites
Before you configure the offer:
- The auto-renewable subscription and subscription group exist and are ready.
- You know the territories where the offer should apply.
- Legal and finance agree on duration, price, and how it appears in reporting.
- Your app handles offer redemption states without dead ends.
- You have a messaging plan (email, push, or in-app) for eligible customers.
Configure the offer
In App Store Connect or Helm on Mac:
- Open the subscription product.
- Create a win-back offer with a clear internal name (
winback-90-day-2026-h2). - Set duration, price (or free period if that is your design), and eligible territories.
- Confirm customer eligibility matches your intent.
- Save and wait for the offer to become available for distribution channels you use.
Name offers after the campaign and half-year, not after “new offer 3”. Future you will thank present you.
Offer codes and redeem links
For controlled outreach, generate offer codes tied to the win-back offer:
- Export codes into a tracked sheet or CRM field
- Give support a documented make-good path
- Prefer redeem links when you message from mobile
On iPhone, Helm focuses on discounts: list products, create offer codes, and share redeem links when you are away from your desk. Full catalog and pricing workflows live on macOS.
Measure return quality
Track more than redemptions:
- Reactivation rate among eligible churned subscribers
- Retention through the second paid period after the offer
- Support volume and refund rate on returning cohorts
- Whether win-back customers convert to annual plans later
A spike in redemptions with immediate re-churn means the offer was a discount, not a win-back.
How Helm helps
Helm covers subscription products, pricing, introductory, promotional, and win-back offers, plus offer code creation and export. The product launch list walks pricing, localizations, and review information so you leave Missing Metadata behind. Automate related IAP flows with helm-asc on Helm Pro when agents or scripts are part of your store ops.
